One of the really cool things about the Paramount Theatre, is that as you drive up to it on Congress Ave. you are treated to an extraordinary view of the TX State Capitol.
I will never forget going to Paramount Theatre to see Matthew McConaughey for his screening of Sahara March 2005. It was an exciting evening on many levels, but one moment in time was while we were waiting outside for him to arrive. Limo after limo pulled up and dispersed passengers, but no McConaughey.. Finally, here comes a pickup pulling an Airstream! We should have guessed, right? Matthew gets out.. and two girls driving by stopped their car abruptly and sat with their mouths open in utter astonishment. It was too funny. Then Matthew McConaughey gets out of the pickup with his grin and ever present toothpick, to cheers from the 1000+ crowd. It was a fun, fun Texas night!
Soooo, back to Paramount Theatre Austin:
It was built in 1915 and is the oldest surviving theatre and landmark in Austin. The Paramount Theatre is responsible for a wide array of performers on its stage. Comedy, drama, music, dance, spoken word, children’s programming and numerous films have entertained thousands of people each year. Because of the various youth outreach programs, many children are able to gain admission for free or at a fraction of the cost. Its inception was home to vaudeville, silent movies and operates under the Austin Theatre Alliance. It is a non-profit organization that brings in a wide variety of entertainers.
The Paramount Theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It caters to Austin’s red carpet film premieres and is part of the Austin Film Festival. The theatre hosts many musical events, release parties, and books local talent and touring acts. Through the years, its stage has accommodated Houdini, the Marx Brothers, Helen Hayes, Orson Welles, Sara Bernhardt and the Ziegfeld Follies among many other entertainers.
Because of its huge interest in the arts community, the Paramount Theatre definitely serves as an anchor for the cultured lifestyle Austin is so well known for.
Since its reorganization and restoration the Paramount Theatre has entertained millions in Austin and surrounding communities. Series of Broadway plays as well as a children’s series have featured Charlotte’s Web, The Wizard of Oz, Velveteen Rabbit, and the most popular attraction, Greater Tuna. .. well.. I’d say the evening Matthew McConaughey came to the Paramount for his Sahara screening was the most popular ‘attraction’..at least in my book. 🙂
