The Frank Erwin Center, Austin TX, commonly referred as the Erwin Center, is within walking distance of downtown Austin and the Capital of Texas. It is located deep in the heart of the University of Texas.

The center was named after Frank Erwin, who attended the University of Texas and was a member of Kappa Sigma. The Erwin Center is currently a primary venue for large private and public events. Entertainment is quite varied and includes concerts, wrestling events and private banquets.

The Frank Erwin Center has a lower arena and upper mezzanine. It accommodates almost 20,000 spectators. The first major event to play at the Erwin Center was the University of Texas versus The University of Oklahoma men’s basketball game in 1977; a little over 12,000 enthusiastic fans attended. Since then The Erwin Center has provided the most spectacular live entertainment.

Officially known as the Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Center, the Frank Erwin Center is a multipurpose arena located at the University of Texas Austin campus. Due to the fact that it appears like a round, drum-like feature from the outside, it’s sometimes known as the Superdrum or The Drum. It is home to the University of Texas’ women’s and men’s basketball programs. The center also serves as a venue for entertainment events.

Frank Erwin Center Austin TX History

The history of Frank Erwin Center can be traced to 1977 when it was first built with intention of the Gregory Gymnasium. The first event to be hosted here was a UT basketball game which took place 29 November, 1977. It was later closed down between 2001 and 2003during which renovations were ongoing. The new features added during the renovation include Lone Star Room, addition of outdoor electronic video signs, indoor electronic video signs, new scoreboard, 28 more suites, elevator modernizations, new concession stands and restrooms, as well as life safety upgrade.

The arena was named after Frank Erwin Jr., who was a former student of the University of Texas as well as a member of the university’s Board of Regents. During his time as a student, Frank Erwin was a member of Kappa Sigma, just as were several other notable alumnus of the university after whom buildings have been named including Harry Huntt Ransom, William Hogg, Denton Cooley and Beauford Jester. The arena was originally known as Special Events Center and was only renamed in 1980 after the death of Frank Erwin.

Frank Erwin Center Austin, TX is divided into a two layered layout i.e upper mezzanine and lower arena and the area can sit up to 16,755 people. There is an average of 20 rows deep on the outer ring of the arena as well as an average of 24 rows deep on the upper mezzanine. It should however be noted that the size of the inner arena usually depends a lot on the type of event hosted at any given time.

What Happens at Frank Erwin Center?

The Frank Erwin Center is located in downtown Austin, Texas right off HWY 35. It’s generally considered as the premier for private as well as large public events. The arena hosts a diverse type of events some of which include private banquets, wresting events, and music concerts. Until the playoffs moved to San Antonio in 2015, Frank Erwin center hosted the semifinals as well as the finals of the University Interscholastic League boys and girls playoffs in all the five classifications. The arena also hosted the quarterfinal matches for the 2011 Davis Cup World Group played by United States Vs. Spain.

• A concert by Bee Gee on June 29, 1979 as part of their Spirits Having Flown Tour
• The arena hosted UFC Fight Night: Marquardt vs. Palhares on Wednesday September 15, 2010
• The singer search program by Fox dubbed The X Factor was hosted here during the audition stages of the show’s second season in May 24-25, 2012
• From May 22, 2013 to May 23, 2012, Paul McCartney wowed the audience as part of his Out There! Tour
• The American Idol auditions on August 11 2010 and August 7 2013
• ESPN game Day Live hosted on February 25, 2006

Adele will perform on the arena’s stage for the first time in five years for two days from November 4 to November 5. The tickets for the show have already sold out BUT lucky for you we have Adele tickets.

Since the opening of Frank Erwin Center, attendance to events hosted here over the years totals more than 25.8 million. Of all the events hosted at the arena, the highest grossing event was Paul McCartney’s concert held from May 22 to May 23, 2013 as part of his Out There! Tour.
