Each year we’re blessed in Austin “Wicked Musical” and this year does not disappoint.
The Wicked musical is a whole lot better than the Wizard of Oz in my not so humble opinion!
Wicked the Musical
If you haven’t seen Wicked musical before, then you are absolutely missing out. I can tell you now – Wicked is totally wicked!
Wicked the Musical – the story
Wicked is a musical based on the witches of the “Land of Oz”. In fact, the story of the musical is based on the “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” created by Gregory Maguire which was derived from “The Wizard of Oz” film made in 1939 and the ever classic children’s favorite story “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum – a famous author for children’s books/novels. The music and lyrics are mainly created by Stephen Lawrence Schwartz – a well-known lyricist and composer for musical theater. The book musical is written by Winnie Holzman – an established screenwriter and poet.
Wicked’s main characters are Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West), Glinda (Good Witch of the North or just Glinda the Good), Fiyero, Madame Morrible, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Nessarose, Doctor Dillamond and Boq.
Currently, the actors/actresses of the Broadway musical show “Wicked” are Jackie Burns, Chandra Lee Schwartz, Tom McGowan, Richard H. Blake, Cristy Candler, Kathy Fitzgerald, Etai BenShlomo, and Tom Flynn. Jackie Burns has the present role for Elphaba while Chandra Lee Schwartz has the role of Glinda. The original actress who played Elphaba was Idina Menzel (Yes, she was a guest on Glee, too.) And Kristin Chenoweth for Glinda (Oh yes, she’s April Rhodes from Glee).
Did you know? That Wicked has been getting awards/nominations since its inception in 2003? Now, again, that’s a wicked musical!

And to add more, Outer Critics Circle Awards gave the musical the following awards in 2004: Outstanding Broadway Musical, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding Set Design. It was a very big year for the show, indeed.
Did you know? Wicked has received a Grammy Award already? In 2005 Grammy Awards, Wicked received the ‘Best Musical Show Album’ and this was from the original cast.
Wicked, the musical, has received a lot of very good reviews both from professional reviewers, from fans and basically, from various people who have seen the musical. A group of musical theatre goers said that the musical is just wonderful and that it was so ‘spellbinding’, they will be seeing it again here in Texas! Isn’t that awesome? How about you?
