Ballet Austin’s The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker’s story takes place at the house of the Silberhaus on Christmas Eve and ends with the Silberhaus’ daughter and the Prince being crowned to rule ‘Confiturembourg’ indefinitely. You are sure to be inspired, captivated, and be in awe the whole time.
The choreography of this two-act ballet was initially done by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. This ballet was first seen in December of 1892 and the very 1st production was filled with mixed reviews from critics. Yet, even then, the critics couldn’t help but be mesmerized.
Ballet Austin is a ballet academy in Austin, Texas. It is one of the largest classical ballet companies in our country. It even caters classes for children (starting ages 3 and 4) as well as adults. FYI, one of their longest running ballet shows is indeed The Nutcracker.
Since Ballet Austin is a ballet teaching school too, the kids (party scene and the others) from Act I are played by the children from the Austin academy. The students are given opportunities to be a part of the show. There are actually over 200 dancers for this ballet act alone.
The Nutcracker – Austin has given justice to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s composition. And Stephen Mills’ choreography is quoted to be ‘sprinkled with magic’. You’ll be enthralled with the dancers’ moves while the music is lively and captivating – The Austin Symphony Orchestra (founded in 1911) is an amazing and talented group.
Austin Ballet’s The Nutcracker will not only amaze you with its choreography though. Starting from the stage effects down to the most minute detail of the show, you’ll be on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next.
One of the famous stage effects is the scene where Clara shrinks to doll-size. Around her everything grows bigger… especially the Christmas tree. This scene charms the entire audience as it is pretty unbelievable and always referred as a ‘truly magical moment’.
