Jonathan Butler Early Life
Talk about child prodigies! Singing since the age of 7 Jonathan Butler released his first album at the age of just 12! He’s made history by being the first black singer to be played on white radio in his home town of Cape Town, South Africa. He had three albums hit gold when he was just a teenager. He continued his career in London more than a decade later where he’s seen such successes as Grammy nominations in both the R&B and contemporary jazz categories and two more gold albums in 1987 and 2004.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Butler was the youngest of thirteen siblings and grew up among apartheid and segregation. He says, “I was born poor, but richly blessed with talent and the gift to make music. I can’t dismiss where I’ve been or where I’ve come from. I’m a proud South African and I came from nothing.” With a great love for his home country Butler continues to support children and teens to help raise them out of poverty and find a life for themselves the way he did. How cool is that?!
Jonathan Butler Remains a Superstar in South Africa
South Africa is very proud of it’s own Jonathan Butler and most of his albums including “Please Stay”, “I Love How You Love Me”, “Jonathan Butler”, and “Surrender” have all gone gold in his native country as well as across the world. His music has been played over a wide variety of genres including contemporary jazz, pop, gospel, R&B, and adult contemporary.
His music resonates with a wide range of people due to his personal struggle of growing up a child star in a nation that was struggling to establish equality. He was celebrated for his musical talent at the same time he was denied basic rights as a black person in South Africa. He has watched his country change for the better over the years and is proud of his South African heritage. His music comforts and inspires and when he sings he pronounces the power of love, a healing emotion.

Jonathan Butler Gives Back
Knowing what it was like to grow up in poverty Butler started the Jonathan Butler Foundation in his native South Africa. His foundation strives to serve children ages 4 to 17 with a music and arts program that operates on the mission statement, “Purpose kills addiction.”
An avid golfer he pours his heart and soul into his performances and his pure love for his music radiates off the stage and captivates his audiences. As much as he loves to perform he adores interacting with his fans, too. For the past four years he takes a tour of 35 fans on a fall safari where he shares his homeland by visiting important landmarks from his childhood as well as historical landmarks like the prison on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned before becoming president.
